Boyfriend Won't Go On Vacation

by Kelly
(Dallas, TX, United States)

I have been dating my boyfriend Sam for almost four years. We both are in our early twenties and still live at home. I am currently in graduate school and he works for a company.

Sam is a car fanatic. He loves to buy old cars and fix them up (when he gets around to it) for more money; he is always spending money on various automobile parts and accessories.

Last summer, I begged him to take me on vacation to the beach, even if it was just for a weekend getaway. However, the only vacation that we took was a one-night stay in a nearby city for a car event, and we even brought his best friend!

Now that it is summer, I am trying yet again to convince him to take me on a beach vacation. He says that he hates the beach and does not want to spend money doing something he loathes.

I have offered to go somewhere where we will both be happy; I have even offered to help pay for it. The only places he is willing to go involve cars. What can I do?

Sincerely,
Needs a vacation

Difference of interest
by: samson

It seems to me that you have a difference of interest with your boyfriend. You have to recognize this.

Can you live with that? Answer that question soberly.

Let me put this straight.

There's nothing wrong with having a difference of interest with someone you love. Hey, diversity is the spice of life.

The problem is not your difference of interest/opinion. It's how you feel about it.

Here's what I think you should do.

Take active interest in what he loves - cars. Learn to do some of the things he does or at lest assist him in some respects.

Sometime later, ask him to assist you in this stuff you love - vacation.

Give, then take. It always works wonders.

The solution to the problem is to start by giving him your attention.

Kindness begets kindness.

Take an interest in his stuff and he will take an interest in yours.

Wait a minute.

What's wrong with blending a car show with a vacation?

It's about giving and taking.

You may start with blending the two. Sometime in the future when he's really into you, you may succeed in stealing him away on vacation all to yourself - without cars.
