Does He Like Me Back?

There's this guy in my class that I like and we sit together and talk to each other quite a lot.

There were times when he seems to like me and is not afraid to show it (like when he puts his arms around me, compliments me), but recently it seems like he's turned colder and more indifferent towards me.

My friends say he stares at me a lot down the hallway and his friends seem to notice me more, but I just can't comprehend his coldness. He had gave me his number and I had called him once, but he was busy then so he said he'd call me back later, but he never did.

The next day though, he brought it up first thing in the morning and asked what I needed help on. He seems to be sending a lot of mixed messages. I'm confused ... does he like me back? Why do his actions mean?
