Is my girlfriend gay?

I just found out that she used to be in a relationship with another woman, it was a romantic and sexual relationship that lasted about 2 months, they even lived together.

She says that it was a very hard time in her life and this person was there for her which is why she fell for her. but many girls have close female friends and they dont fall in love with them.

She claims that she is absolutely not gay but i just dont know what to think. How can you have a relationship, even worse a sexual relationship with someone of your own sex and not be gay?
