Marriage Counseling – Marital Advice for Relationship Problems

Marriage counseling can help solve relationship problems. But most people don’t like asking for marital advice. So I ask, "Is marriage counseling really worth the cost?"

Should you speak to a marriage family counselor when you have a serious problem?

Talking about cost . . .

Most people who do not favor consulting a marriage family counselor for marital advice when they have relationship problems do not hesitate for cost reasons. Most are just not comfortable with discussing their marital problems with a total stranger.

First, there is the issue of confidentiality.

Will the marriage counseling expert respect you enough to keep the relationship problems discussed with him a secret? Will he tell others about it? Is he likely to become a blackmailer, using the privileged information he has as a weapon against you?

There's no doubt about it. You risk falling into the wrong hands when you seek the help of a marriage counseling professional.

Nevertheless, you must not over-exaggerate this risk.

The risk associated with consulting with a marriage counselor is not peculiar to relationship problems solving. You run the same risk when you seek the services of any professional.

For example, how do you know the medical doctor you have chosen as your family doctor is capable enough? What's the technical capability and depth of that surgeon who's going to perform that sensitive surgery on you?

Oh, he comes highly recommended.

But on that very night of the surgery, what would be his state of mind? Would he be emotionally balanced when he picks those set of knives to tear you apart?

You run the same risks when you choose a lawyer. You could go to jail for a long, long time if your lawyer does a poor job in the court room.

Get the gist? Are you listening?

Bottom line.

When you have relationship problems that stop you from moving forward, problems beyond what you can possibly handle alone, talk to someone.

This could be a friend, a relative, or a relationship expert.

This brings us to the second issue with marriage counseling.

Most people feel that speaking to a marriage counselor does not really make a difference. They say relationship problems don't go away even after you speak to a marriage counselor.

But wait.

Do you honestly expect your relationship problems to just disappear simply because you got marital advice from a relationship expert?

Be realistic.

Marriage counseling provided by a relationship expert will not make your problems disappear. It simply will show you options you haven't previously considered.

Speaking to an expert broadens your horizon and let's you see the big picture.

However, you still have to deal with your problems yourself. You will take the tough decisions yourself and you must accept responsibility for your actions.

So, what's the value of marriage counseling?

As mentioned above, a good marriage counselor . . .

  • Listens with compassion. It's difficult to get people to listen to you these days. Everyone seems to be in a hurry. Everyone are too involved with solving their own problems to pay you too much attention.

On the other hand, a marriage counselor listens to you with interest. It's what you pay him to do. This is a huge load off your chest. Remember, a problem shared is half solved.

  • Provides options and helps you see the big picture
  • Provides guidance and direction
  • Is realistic and down-to-earth. He tells you the blunt truth, perhaps mildly. But he tells you all the same.
  • Helps you get your self-confidence and dignity back to deal with the problems you face
  • Generates renewed energy. You get a new lease of life . . . a new desire to win.

Marriage family counselors provide marital advice to countless number of people. You sure can benefit from their wealth of experience.

One of the very first lesson you'll learn when you get marital advice from a relationship expert is that your situation is not peculiar. You're not the only one in the world with this sort of relationship problems.

    Is this some consolation? Perhaps.

Beyond that, you quickly learn that others before you . . . ordinary people like you . . . have dealt successfully with these problems. You can too.

Immediately, you get a new desire to win.

Do speak to a marriage family counselor and get sound marital advice when your relationship problems overwhelm you. It helps. It really helps.
