My Boyfriend has been hurt in the past

I have been dating this guy for some time...4 months...and everything is going nicely...just that I feel that he purposely keeps a distance and does not want to get too close to me.

I have talked to him about it and his explanation is that he has been hurt pretty bad in the past by his ex-girlfriend who cheated on him, and that although he has feelings for me...it will take time for him to be able to open up to me and love me.

I really like this guy and have developed nice feelings over these months...I have patience and I'm willing to wait until he is ready.

I just would love to have some advise on how best to win his trust and to ease his journey ... how can I best deal with this situation???

I am afraid that the more time goes by ... the closer I get to him, the more I feel for him...and then what if he stays in the same place...and keeps his heart guarded?

I am so scared to love and not be loved in return.
